Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport

Our Part of Texas...spotlight on Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport...
Few people realize this historic airport has contributed much to aviation history. The first war plane ever used in battle by the USA took off from the airport in 1905, drawing Mexican troop fire and disabling the aircraft - the first military plane to ever come under attack.
In 1929, Charles Lindburg made a hisroic Mexico City/Brownsville flight, landing at the airport to greet fellow aviator Emelia Earhart. The two aviators christened the new airport during ceremonies that year. The airport was the first training facility in the world for instrument flying, and it was the site for America's first jet flight. During  World War II, the airport was home to the 201st Fighter Squadron, the only Mexican military unit to participate in the war.
