Texas Less Traveled.com presents: Our Part of Texas... spotlighting Brownsville, On the Border, By the Sea...

In spite of a colorful frontier past, Brownsville has long been a center for culture and art. In the early days, it was a place where pioneers living on the edge of the frontier would gather and celebrate their independence in makeshift saloons and dance halls.

During the roaring 20s and even the depression years, Brownsville was a bustle of activity as a jumping point for excursions into Mexico by some of Hollywood's most famous stars, and America's industrial giants. By 1928, the famous Capital Theater was open for business in downtown Brownsville, giving the opportunity for locals to mix with the rich and the famous.

Today, the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts is spearheading restoration efforts on the historic Capital Theater, returning the landmark to its former glory as a theater for the performing arts. In addition to this worthy project, the Society also serves up the ever-popular Brownsville Latin Jazz Fest every October, as well as other performing arts programs throughout the year. For more information about the Capital Theater Project or the Society, log on to www.brosociety.org.
