Kayaking and Canoing the Wild Devil's River

The Devils River is a remote, natural, scenic whitewater river that is a perfect ride for experienced paddlers if they are properly equipped for wilderness paddling. For nearly so miles of paddling through the canyon country of remote Southwestern Texas, you will step back in time and experience a lonely. remote and beautiful environment full of wildlife and adventure. The Devil's River is spring fed and flows over solid limestone that keeps the water clear and clean, and its flows and depths increase as it moves downstream. Water quality is among the very best in the State. It is a virtual oasis in the desert.

 

Spring to mid summer and early to mid-autumn are the best times to run the river, but be aware the river is subject to flash flooding as far away as 100 miles upstream. In such cases, the canyon rapids can become treacherous. Also be aware that the river runs through private property and property owners are adamant about preventing trespassing. Respect their rights and know the laws.

 

The best rafting in Texas is located about 50 miles from Del Rio; San Antonio is 200 miles away; 280 to Austin; nearly 400 miles east is Houston and 400 miles north is Dallas 400 miles; El Paso is just a  little more than 400 miles to the west. MORE

Halloween on the Riverwalk

Anytime is a swell time to visit the Alamo City. But October is a favorite month for many because the changing season brings cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. that is, until Halloween night. Party like a zombie on the River Walk this year, a great time for all ages.  Most revelers wear their costumes and you'll find plenty of fun at the many bars, restaurants and club that line the miles of River in downtown San Antonio.

 

Part of the fun is meeting and interplaying with the many costumed and well-intended ghouls that turn out in large numbers making the event one of the largest Halloween parties in Texas. The River Walk Association stages a Halloween boat parade which thrills onlookers and revelers alike and there is a $1,000 cash costume contest at one of the clubs that line the river.

 

Put together your best costume and head down to the Alamo City this frightful season to enjoy the fun being offered in historic and beautiful downtown San Antonio where the party never stops. MORE

 

Fredericksburg Food &Wine Festival

It's harvest time in Texas and this year's grape harvest is reported to one of the best in recent years. As Texas wine becomes more and more popular and in demand nationwide, there's good reason to turn out for this showcase event featuring the best foods of the Texas Hill Country and the best wines offered up by viticulture operations across Central Texas and beyond.

Assaulting The Rock!

Get your bad boy hiking shoes on and get ready to tackle the second largest granite rock in the nation! Enchanted Rock State Natural Area just east of Fredericksburg offers the perfect chance to get out in the early spring weather and enjoy the geologically-rich Llano Escarpment uplift, a rare formation that populates the landscapes with boulders, canyons, streams, hills and valleys, with plenty of nature all around and some of the best and most rugged trekking country in Central Texas.

 

The rock provides a day or weekend of activities as you explore it and the surrounding park lands. And the climb - even to the top - is fairly easy to make even for casual hikers. Before long the wild Texas wildflowers will be gracing the landscape all across Central Texas and there's never a bad time to visit the Rock. Wanna speed up the cooling down process in Texas? Head underground on an expedition of discovery at one of the state's hidden caverns.
