Texas Less Traveled Radio Series
Episode One: Spotlight on Port Isabel/South Padre Island
It must have been a strange, rugged countrysdide when Spanish explorers landed on the sandy beaches of Texas' lower barrier island in the 14th century. The sub-tropical forests were full of wildlife with over 400 varieties of birds alone, some never seen before by European eyes. In spite of fierce Karankawa indians, the Spanish were smart enough to realize the potential of this new found real estate and set out to claim it in the name of the Queen.
Port Isabel, named after Queen Isabella of Spain, was the focal point of exploratory forays into Texas. South Padre Island offered the perfect shelter from open Gulf waters and the Laguna Madre soon became the parking lot for Spanish galleons bringing the Old World to the new.
Today South Padre Island/Port Isabel area is a prime tourist destination offering year round fun in the sun and great Gulf seafood.Come visit for a week, a month, a season. www.sopadre.com.
